a disciplined mind, a generous spirit, and a lasting devotion to both family and community

Arthur Pendelton Vance, born November 14, 1948, in Grand Rapids, Michigan, died on July 10, 2026. His life moved with quiet strength, guided by duty, learning, and care for the generations who followed him. Those who knew him understood the steady force he brought to the world: a disciplined mind, a generous spirit, and a lasting devotion to both family and community.

He graduated from Michigan State University in 1970 with a Bachelor of Science in Education, preparing for the work that would define much of his life. Arthur went on to serve as a high school biology teacher for 35 years, shaping young minds with patience and conviction. In 1982, he was honored as the Regional "Teacher of the Year" for innovative student-led ecology initiatives, recognition that reflected not only excellence in the classroom, but also his belief that students could become active guardians of the natural world. In 1995, he founded the "Green Spaces" community youth garden, a project that provided fresh produce to local food banks and gave young people the chance to learn responsibility, stewardship, and service with their own hands.

His commitment to education did not end with retirement. After retiring from teaching in 2013, Arthur relocated to Utah, carrying with him the same calm purpose that had marked his years in Michigan. He enjoyed hiking and bird watching, finding peace in the natural world he had spent so long teaching others to respect. He also tutored his grandchildren, extending his gift as a teacher into the heart of his own family, where instruction was joined with love.

Arthur’s personal life was rooted in enduring devotion. He married his college sweetheart, Eleanor Davis, in 1973 in Lansing, Michigan, beginning a partnership that stood as a central bond in his life. He is survived by his wife, Eleanor Vance, whose companionship shared in the long arc of his journey. He also leaves behind his children, Marianne Vance-Holloway and Thomas Vance, who carry forward his values of thoughtfulness, service, and perseverance. His grandchildren, Chloe Holloway and Lucas Holloway, were part of the legacy he cherished deeply, and his time spent tutoring them was one more expression of his faith in the promise of the next generation.

Arthur was preceded in death by his sibling, Robert Vance. His memory remains joined to those family ties that neither time nor death can erase.

Family and friends are invited to honor his life at a Celebration of Life on July 18, 2026, at 11:00 a.m. at The Outdoor Amphitheater at Riverdale Nature Reserve, 860 West Riverdale Road, Ogden, Utah 84405. Guests are invited to wear green or earth tones instead of traditional black attire, a fitting tribute to a man whose life was so closely bound to the living world. A reception will follow at 12:30 p.m. at The Reception Pavilion at Riverdale Nature Reserve, where a catered luncheon with organic, locally sourced menu options will be served. A private viewing for immediate family members will be held on July 17, 2026, from 6:00 p.m. to 7:30 p.m. at The Woodland Room, Evergreen Willow Funeral Home on Willow Street in Ogden.

Arthur Pendelton Vance leaves behind a legacy not of noise, but of enduring influence. In the classroom, in the garden, on the trail, and within his family, he taught by example. His was a life of purpose, cultivation, and care. The force of that life remains, carried onward by all who learned from him and all who loved him.
