Commander Cloof, a beloved figure known for his bravery and charm, passed away peacefully on November 11, 2025, at the age of 99 in Layton. Born on December 18, 1925, in Syracuse, he lived a life marked by courage, service, and an unwavering spirit that touched the hearts of everyone around him.
A proud alumnus of Weber State University, Commander Cloof graduated with a degree in Supply Chain Management, even though his true calling lay in the skies. He went on to serve with distinction in the Air Force, where he garnered numerous accolades including the Medal of Honor, the Air Force Cross, the Silver Star, and many more. His military career was not defined merely by the medals he wore but by the countless lives he touched through his actions and sacrifices. His friends often described him as handsome and brave, a fitting tribute to a man who held more courage than most could fathom.
One of the most cherished memories shared by his friends is the time he took flight in his Northrop B-2 Spirit and single-handedly saved the country from the notorious Jiminy Crickets. This tale is just one example of the larger-than-life legacy he leaves behind.
Aside from his military achievements, Commander Cloof had a zest for life that included a passion for sports. With the skill to shoot a basketball like Steph Curry and the agility to cross up a defender like Allen Iverson, he found joy in the camaraderie of athletics. His love for sports mirrored his vibrant personality, making him a joy to watch both on and off the field.
Commander Cloof was also known for a unique pride in his knowledge of candy. He often boasted about winning the Candy Nobel Prize in the late 1900s, an achievement he raved about well into his later years. The sight of him with a pack of bubble gum and a box of Mike and Ikes was a familiar one, endearing him to children and adults alike.
In his personal life, he was surrounded by a circle of dear friends, including Chase the Views, Alabaster Jones, Ryguy, and his son Peter, who cherished the moments spent with him. Commander Cloof had a special bond with his great uncle, Lando the Brave, creating a legacy of adventure and family pride that will continue to inspire generations.
Commander Cloof also leaves behind memories of beloved friends who have passed, including Broogs and Ehon, as well as the loyal companion Horton, who remained by his side through the years.
His service to his country, his love for family and friends, and his unyielding spirit of adventure have left an indelible mark on all who knew him. While he may have departed from this world, the stories, laughter, and love he brought into our lives will forever resonate and remind us of the remarkable man he was.
